Title: Necronomicon: Book of Dead Lovecraft, the well-known horror writer, is looking in the late thirties after the book 'Necronomicon'.

He finds it guarded by monks in an old library. He then copies some stories from it, which unfold for our eyes- and his Written by E. Theoretically speaking, this is one horror movie concept that couldn't possibly have gone wrong!

Lovecraft, filmed by an interesting variation of directors, and moreover linked together through an inventive wraparound story that revolves on Lovecraft himself; as played by Jeffrey Combs who else?

Considering the surreal themes and sinister setting, these should have been stories that spontaneously inflict nightmares and cause phobias amongst the viewers, but sadly it never comes to that.

You feel emotionless the entire time. With the suspiciously eerie librarians observing his every move, Lovecraft reads to us three stories of the macabre.

The Necronomicon is simultaneously the leading thread running through the stories, as all the protagonists come into contact with the book one way or the other.

The first segment has a Swedish heir returning to the ancient family hotel by the seaside. He learns that his ancestor lost his beloved wife and child in a shipwreck, but managed to bring them back to life through forces hidden inside the hotel.

Since Edward also was responsible for the dead of his girlfriend in a car crash, he hopes to discover the secret and bring her back from the other side as well.

Director Christophe Gans "Brotherhood of the Wolf" takes the maximum out of the marvelous seaside location and the morbid old hotel. The flashback, with Richard Lynch as the archetypal sea captain ancestor, is masterfully handled as well.

However, Bruce Payne's stone-cold performance as well as the hideously abrupt anti-climax plummet the quality level enormously. The second story, entitled "The Cold", is my choice for best segment.

It's about a sleazy journalist who knocks at the door of a large mansion and brutally confronts the lady of the house with the mystery of why so many people vanished after having visited this place.

She has no option but to tell him about her mother's acquaintance with the brilliant previous tenant — Dr. Madden — who developed a unique but sinister method for preserving his youth and virility.

One slight disadvantage, though, it requires a lot of human spinal fluid and must remain safeguarded in a cold environment.

Personally, I'm a sucker for horror stories revolving on the quest for immortality like "The Rejuvenator" and all the movies about Countess Bathory ; especially when they feature an outrageously over-the-top mad scientist character, like David Warner in this case!

This is also the only segment that finds the exact right balance between juicy gross-out effects and high level of tension.

Not bad for a Japanese director that allegedly couldn't speak a word of English on the set! The third and final story has director Brian Yuzna's trademarks all over it.

This segment is lacking substantially, but you'll nevertheless stare with your eyes and mouth wide open, as it is a non-stop spitfire of pitch-dark and ghastly images.

Two police officers are chasing a car down to a grim neighborhood and literally end up in a subterranean labyrinth of terror. Words even file to describe the atrocities they encounter there, including petrifying elderly folks, flying carnivorous demons and extraterrestrial butchers.

I like a good portion of gore and bloodshed, but this particular segment was quite unbearable. Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate.

Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again.

He knows where They had trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread. By Their smell can men sometimes know Them near, but of Their semblance can no man know, saving only in the features of those They have begotten on mankind; and of those are there many sorts, differing in likeness from man's truest eidolon to that shape without sight or substance which is Them.

They walk unseen and foul in lonely places where the Words have been spoken and the Rites howled through at their Seasons.

The wind gibbers with Their voices, and the earth mutters with Their consciousness. They bend the forest and crush the city, yet may not forest or city behold the hand that smites.

Kadath in the cold waste hath known Them, and what man knows Kadath? The ice desert of the South and the sunken isles of Ocean hold stones whereon Their seal is engraven, but who hath seen the deep frozen city or the sealed tower long garlanded with seaweed and barnacles?

Great Cthulhu is Their cousin, yet can he spy Them only dimly. As a foulness shall ye know Them. Their hand is at your throats, yet ye see Them not; and Their habitation is even one with your guarded threshold.

Yog-Sothoth is the key to the gate, whereby the spheres meet. Man rules now where They ruled once; They shall soon rule where man rules now.

After summer is winter, after winter summer. They wait patient and potent, for here shall They reign again. The Necronomicon ' s appearance and physical dimensions are not clearly stated in Lovecraft's work.

Other than the obvious black letter editions, it is commonly portrayed as bound in leather of various types and having metal clasps. Moreover, editions are sometimes disguised.

Many commercially available versions of the book fail to include any of the contents that Lovecraft describes.

The Simon Necronomicon in particular has been criticized for this. According to Lovecraft's "History of the Necronomicon ", copies of the original Necronomicon were held by only five institutions worldwide:.

The Miskatonic University also holds the Latin translation by Olaus Wormius, printed in Spain in the 17th century. Other copies, Lovecraft wrote, were kept by private individuals.

Joseph Curwen, as noted, had a copy in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward A version is held in Kingsport in " The Festival " The provenance of the copy read by the narrator of " The Nameless City " is unknown; a version is read by the protagonist in "The Hound" Although Lovecraft insisted that the book was pure invention and other writers invented passages from the book for their own works , there are accounts of some people actually believing the Necronomicon to be a real book.

Lovecraft himself sometimes received letters from fans inquiring about the Necronomicon ' s authenticity.

Pranksters occasionally listed the Necronomicon for sale in book store newsletters or inserted phony entries for the book in library card catalogues where it may be checked out to one ' A.

Alhazred ', ostensibly the book's author and original owner. The Vatican also receives requests for this book from those who believe the Vatican Library holds a copy.

In , Owlswick Press issued an edition of the Necronomicon written in an indecipherable, apparently fictional language known as "Duriac".

The book contains a brief introduction by L. Sprague de Camp. The line between fact and fiction was further blurred in the late s when a book purporting to be a translation of "the real" Necronomicon was published.

This book, by the pseudonymous "Simon," had little connection to the fictional Lovecraft Mythos but instead was based on Sumerian mythology. It was later dubbed the " Simon Necronomicon ".

Going into trade paperback in it has never been out of print and has sold , copies by making it the most popular Necronomicon to date.

Despite its contents, the book's marketing focused heavily on the Lovecraft connection and made sensational claims for the book's magical power.

The blurb states it was "potentially, the most dangerous Black Book known to the Western World". Three additional volumes have since been published — The Necronomicon Spellbook , a book of pathworkings with the 50 names of Marduk ; Dead Names: The Dark History of the Necronomicon , a history of the book itself and of the late s New York occult scene; and The Gates Of The Necronomicon , instructions on pathworking with the Simon Necronomicon.

During a pursuit of a suspect known as "the Butcher", two police officers, Paul and Sarah of the Philadelphia Police Department, are arguing over their failed relationship and the coming baby.

The argument leads to a crash, flipping the cruiser upside down. Paul, having unbuckled his seat belt in the argument, is knocked out and dragged off by an unseen person.

Sarah unbuckles herself, breaks the window and exits the vehicle. Unable to call for backup, she follows a blood trail alone.

Inside the old warehouse, Sarah follows as Paul is taken down a service elevator. Sarah trips on a rope and falls through to the floor, saved from impact by the rope around her ankle.

The rope breaks a second after. As she gets up, she finds a man in glasses, Harold Benedict. Insisting he is merely the landlord of the warehouse and the Butcher is a tenant, he offers to lead her to him.
