Later at school, Evie turns her friends against Tracy, and Tracy slowly begins to realize the negative effects of her lifestyle when she is told that she will have to repeat the seventh grade.
While walking home from school, Brady offers Tracy a ride and takes her home where Melanie, Evie, and Brooke are sitting quietly in the living room waiting for her.
Brooke confronts Tracy about her drug use and stealing, having been convinced that Tracy was the bad influence on Evie. Outraged, Tracy insists that Evie was the instigator, but the skeptical Brooke refuses to listen and announces that she is moving Evie to Ojai to keep her away from Tracy.
Melanie defends Tracy's innocence but then Brooke pulls Tracy's sleeve up to show Melanie Tracy's self-harm scars. After a screaming match, Brooke and Evie leave.
Tracy weeps in Melanie's arms and attempts to fight against her mother's embrace. She tearfully pleads with Melanie to let go, but Melanie persists and the two fall asleep together on Tracy's bed.
The last scene shows a dream sequence of Tracy spinning alone and screaming on a park merry-go-round during the daytime.
Director Catherine Hardwicke , who had worked prior as a film production designer, has called Nikki Reed a "surrogate daughter", having known her since she was five years old.
After completing the script, Hardwicke pitched the idea to various producers she knew, but said that most were "terrified" of the project because of the subject matter.
Hardwicke didn't think it would be fitting for Reed to play Tracy and auditioned hundreds of girls for the part.
After becoming aware of Evan Rachel Wood , Hardwicke came to believe she could make the film only with Wood in the role of Tracy and only that year, with Wood at that age.
Hardwicke has said Holly Hunter 's agreement to play the role of Tracy's mother Melanie was a key boost to bringing the production together; she met with Hunter in New York City to discuss the film, after which Hunter agreed to take the part.
It's extremely raw, it was not a filled-in picture. It felt more like a feeling than anything else. And that's unusual for a script to communicate like that.
It sort of declares itself, it comes at you. And the movie does, too. And that's unusual, for a movie to be able to have the same impetus on the screen that it has on the page.
Most of the adult actors were widely known and all of them reportedly agreed to low pay because they liked the script along with other members of the cast and crew.
Wood and Reed were both 14 years old during filming Wood turned 15 during the shoot. Thirteen was shot on lower-cost super 16mm film over a period of 24 days.
The Freeland home scenes were shot at a rented house in the San Fernando Valley. The outdoor school scenes were shot at Portola Middle School in Tarzana, California.
Some scenes in the film were carefully and colorfully lit, while others were shot only with whatever daylight could be had. Melanie is sober, but it would be fair to say her life is still unmanageable, and although she loves Tracy and protects her with a mother's fierce love, she's clueless about what's going on behind that bedroom door.
Evie's history is often described but somehow never very clear. She lives with someone named Brooke Deborah Kara Unger , who is not quite her mother, not quite her guardian, allegedly her cousin, more like her spaced-out roommate.
Evie tells stories of violence and sexual abuse when she was young, and while we have no trouble believing such things could have happened, it's impossible to be sure when she's telling the truth.
Although Evie is trouble enough on her own, she reaches critical mass after she moves in with Tracy. Perhaps only a year-old like Reed could have found the exact note in dialogue where the mother tries to get answers and information and is rejected and ignored like an unsolicited telephone call.
You might doubt that a girl could conceal from her mother the fact that she has had her tongue and navel pierced, but this movie convinced me of that, and a lot more.
There are moments when you want to cringe at the danger these girls are in. They slip through the bedroom window and hang out on Hollywood Boulevard, they experiment sexually with kids older and tougher than they are, they all but rape "Luke the lifeguard boy" Kip Pardue , a neighbor who accuses them, accurately, of being jail bait.

I enjoyed the film somewhat, but I was pretty disturbed too. The performances from the two lead actresses were what made this film much better than what it turned out to be.
This for me is not a film that warrants multiple viewings, as the troubled teen format is not something that really interests me.
I've seen many teens act this way when I was in High School, all those years ago, and it just infuriates me seeing this.
The story is interesting, but it does lack in some areas and it could have been done much better too. The film flawed, and it is hard to really enjoy because it's a dark film after all, one that showcases the rebellious behavior of teenagers and it's not something that is pleasant to watch.
The film, like I said is a decent affair, but it never becomes anything more than what it should have been. This should have been an accomplished drama, but in the end it's just a so-so movie that feels like it's trying way too hard at being a work that portrays the darkest side of teenage angst.
I really didn't like the characters, and found them to be primadona's and it just was a film that was quite depressing. Well acted with a decent story, Thirteen could have been a far better film as well.
I really wanted to enjoy the film, but it's one of those films that just leaves a lot to be desired.13 is a American psychological crime thriller film directed by Géla Babluani (who also directed the original), stars Sam Riley, Ray Winstone, 50 Cent, Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. it is remake of the Georgian-French film 13 Tzameti.
