What accounts for this expensive inefficiency? Basically this: Companies have simply not known what makes one man able to sell and another not.
As Robert N. McMurry has observed:. A very high proportion of those engaged in selling cannot sell…. If American sales efficiency is to be maximized and the appalling waste of money and manpower which exists today is to be minimized, a constructive analysis must be made of what selling really is and how its effectiveness can be enhanced….
We must look a good deal further—into the mysteries of personality and psychology—if we want real answers. It was the obvious need for a better method of sales selection that led us to embark on seven years of field research in this area.
The article that follows is based on the insights we gained as to the basic characteristics necessary for a salesman to be able to sell successfully.
How Well an Instrument Measuring Empathy and Ego Drive Predicted Sales Success. Our basic theory is that a good salesman must have at least two basic qualities: empathy and ego drive.
Empathy, the important central ability to feel as the other fellow does in order to be able to sell him a product or service, must be possessed in large measure.
Having empathy does not necessarily mean being sympathetic. One can know what the other fellow feels without agreeing with that feeling.
But a salesman simply cannot sell well without the invaluable and irreplaceable ability to get a powerful feedback from the client through empathy.
A parallel might be drawn in this connection between the old antiaircraft weapons and the new heat-attracted missiles. With the old type of ballistic weapon, the gunner would take aim at an airplane, correcting as best he could for windage and driftage, and then fire.
If the shell missed by just a few inches because of a slight error in calculation or because the plane took evasive action, the miss might just as well have been by hundreds of yards for all the good it did.
This is the salesman with poor empathy. He aims at the target as best he can and proceeds along his sales track; but if his target—the customer—fails to perform as predicted, the sale is missed.
This is the salesman with good empathy. He senses the reactions of the customer and is able to adjust to these reactions. He is not simply bound by a prepared sales track, but he functions in terms of the real interaction between himself and the customer.
Sensing what the customer is feeling, he is able to change pace, double back on his track, and make whatever creative modifications might be necessary to home in on the target and close the sale.
The second of the basic qualities absolutely needed by a good salesman is a particular kind of ego drive that makes him want and need to make the sale in a personal or ego way, not merely for the money to be gained.
His feeling must be that he has to make the sale; the customer is there to help him fulfill his personal need. In effect, to the top salesman, the sale—the conquest—provides a powerful means of enhancing his ego.
His self-picture improves dramatically by virtue of conquest and diminishes with failure. Because of the nature of all selling, the salesman will fail to sell more often than he will succeed.
Thus, since failure tends to diminish his self-picture, his ego cannot be so weak that the poor self-picture continues for too long a time.
Rather, the failure must act as a trigger—as a motivation toward greater efforts—that with success will bring the ego enhancement he seeks.
A subtle balance must be found between a an ego partially weakened in precisely the right way to need a great deal of enhancement the sale and b an ego sufficiently strong to be motivated by failure but not to be shattered by it.

You have to read to find out. The narration style was executed flawlessly and the main protagonist voice was so strong that you instantly felt a connection from page one.
Billy was an alcoholic and the author managed to get me into the mindset of an alcoholic. I have had some personal experience with alcoholics and I am always looking for material that discusses that topic, he captured it very well in the sense of how lonely of a life it is and how the loss oneself and loved ones is inevitable.
My interest in the story was always strong because every sentence added to the story. The characters developed so well and formed such strong bonds that just made the experience of the book that much better.
The dialogue and how the characters were written made them literally jump out of the page, some even had that deep Irish accent which I read out loud because it was so amusing.
This is a much-underrated book, that has so much to offer and I feel that everyone should try it, seriously stop reading this review and add it NOW!!!!
If you have read this tell me so we can freaking talk about it. View 2 comments. Aug 28, Maria rated it it was amazing. This is my favourite book of all time.
They way in which the story unfolds and the relationship between the two main characters is amazing and very gripping. I found this book to be an emotional roller coaster which actually made me cry, lovely book and superbly written.
The Odd Couple: Irish edition. Jun 18, Chris Mclaughlin rated it liked it. I have mixed feelings about this book.
Great use of language and the main protagonist was very well drawn. We are given a very full insight into his life. It feels very real and personal and for that reason moments of drama and violence are all the more hard hitting.
It attempts to have a look into both underclass and more middle class social issues, however I don't think it rises that far above cliched depictions of underclass figures.
We have a big build up to a pivotal event that is executed I have mixed feelings about this book. We have a big build up to a pivotal event that is executed skillfully and up until that point the book was close to perfect.
However after the event things meandered and became so topsy-turvy that the story lost a sense of direction. I understand the idea that the writer wanted the characters to be more than cardboard cut-outs, he gives each character a fair hearing with fully developed motives and concerns, but there are still things in here that feel superfluous.
The second half goes on too long, with events that don't need to be included. I felt the characters constant iteration of being a good salesman We experience no evidence of this throughout did nothing to enhance the story.
His current job had little to do with his personality other than that he had failed in his previous career aspirations. Also the gratuitous listing of flora, fauna and wildlife felt like an opportunity for the writer to show off rather than a reflection of the protagonists character traits.
I did enjoy some of the dialogue, and some fine use of language. The book should definitely be applauded for not simplifying the complexity of human emotion and character; and for being a more realistic portrayal of a damaged man's quest for revenge.
It is dark, unflinching and absurdly funny in places, but if it had been a bit tighter in places in could have been a far more impressive piece of work.
I seem to be stuck in a rut, reading books which do not speak to me and which I am reluctant to pick up. I have read several other books by Joseph O'Connor and have enjoyed them, but I found it difficult to enjoy this one.
Maybe it was the difficult theme of revenge or the unreliable narrator, but I could not connect with it. The middle section was especially difficult for me and, though I was sad but relieved by the end, it wasn't enough for me.
Loved it and hated it in turns. Definitely not a feel-good read. NOTICE: Personal Classifieds are placed on a cash only basis. Ads may be phoned in with payment sent promptly.

Thank you for saving him. He is my everything. I can't live without him. How dumb is she!? It's the story of many women in Iran which because of their situation should obey their husbands and love them blindly.
Raana: She has been raped but she doesn't have the courage to sue also she is so embarrassed that this may become a discredit to her.
The prostitute: Imagine A mother with a young daughter what should she do for a living? Nothing in a society specified for Men but to sell her body to those Men!
And finally the woman in the taxi: This woman knows the situation of all the women above. Either something happened to her or to her friends she now sees men all like together.
She's so paranoid that she doesn't see that Emad is doing nothing. So again a man gradually becomes a cow!!
